Back on Barr Trail

by Keeprunningirl on May 29, 2011

It’s been a frustrating couple of months with illness (stubborn sinus infection) following injury and me trying to stay patient and positive.   Waking up today, I felt somewhat better and decided to go on the first Barr Trail run of the season this morning.  I figured I’d take it as easy as I needed to – I just wanted to be out there!    The run went pretty well – managed over 8 miles and while my pace wasn’t the best, I actually did better than I’d expected.  I am glad to have this first trip behind me!

As I posted on my facebook page earlier:

first trip up Barr Trail this season was as difficult as anticipated. But it’s done! It’s all up hill from here :-)

beautiful day

got a few comments on my pink socks...

On the way home, I finally got my new VitaMix.  I have been eyeing this appliance for a while, I am so glad I got it!  I’ve already made my first drink – a delicious beet, fruit smoothie with chia seed that revitalized me post run.  I am looking forward to eating more raw style – especially my veggies and fruits.

beets, carrots and some fruit

cheers!

Mmmm, happy trail and yummy juice! What's not to like? Congrats on being (literally!) back on your feet again. :)

I feel your pain- I spent enough time sick in May that it totally messed with my training. But as I often remind myself, it's one foot in front of the other, one step at a time. The fruit smoothie looks yummy! What a great post-run treat!

Yum, that looks good! Aww, I totally wish that there's something close to that scenery in our local area, it would certainly motivate me to run more.

I was so happy to stumble upon your blog tonight! I just finished reading your Pikes Peak Ascent 2010 recap. Loved all of the pics and am totally getting excited about my first PPA this August. I ran the Steamboat Marathon June 5th just to get the miles under my belt. With that behind me I am now switching gears and adding hills. I would really like to make it to the top in under 5 hours but have no idea how to train. I was just wondering if you have any tips or follow any particular training plan? I am feeling very overwhelmed. I also am a mother runner of 2, married and living outside of Boulder, CO and recently started my own blog about trail running and various races: http://thetrailgoesonforever.b…. Anyway. Loving your blog! And would love any training tips or plans you might like to pass along. Good luck with that 4:45 goal this year!

hi Jen!! love your blog.   It's so cool that you're training for the PPA as well – congrats on Steamboat!  We're fortunate her e because we can train on the actual course but I am sure you can find hill runs in Boulder as well!  Right now, I am pretty much training on the Barr Trail to Barr Camp (6-7 miles up and then back down).  Once the snow clears, we'll also train at the top.  I don't plan on doing more than 30-35 miles a week including that long run.  I'll mix in some speed work and cross-train.  I think the message boards on the PPA/PPM site have a lot of advice: http://www.pikespeakmarathon.o…   good luck!  nice to meet you!!

Looking forward to our first trip up together tomorrow! The trail is tough but so are WE :)

Those look like some healthy smoothies you made there! Great run congratulations it sounds like the first run of the season was successful. I began running after my California doctor told me it would benefit my health and my health is very important to me so I have started to run about 3-4 miles a day which is an improvement for myself.

do you also do HIIT by any chance (High intensity interval training) i've started thatfor two weeks! Its just like running but ALOT more mentally demanding and its great! But yeah, you gotta be careful to have rest days or else it leads to knee and joint injuries (soft tissue) which is very slow to recover. take it easy. :)
